This is a follow-up to an earlier memo in which I said that the time was not right for sending volunteer teams, or even individual volunteers, into Haiti for post-earthquake service.

I have called every Haitian-American pastor of our conference I could reach to talk with them about what they have heard about relatives and friends in Haiti. Most congregations with Haitian-American members report grievous news of deaths, injuries, missing persons, and property damage. The earthquake in Haiti has caused a catastrophe of human suffering.

Ongoing news reports of the disastrous earthquake that ravished Haiti are readily available. People in the United States and around the world are gearing up to bring aid to the people of Haiti. I trust you will stay informed and will respond with the compassion of Jesus Christ.
